1948, Mushrooms and Nasturtiums, by Swedish artist Hans Arvid Ripa. Loosely painted, with some strokes of luscious thick paint, this oil depicts a cluster of delicate chanterelles and a pose of vibrant, orange nasturtiums. You can almost smell the pepperiness of the flowers and the umami of the mushrooms.

About the artist

Hans Arvid Ripa, born September 14, 1912 in Höör, Skåne, died in 2001, was a Swedish painter and theatre decorator.

He was the son of director Herman Ripa and Holda Hanson and married the author Gunlög Bülow-Hübe and later the actor Margaretha Boije.

Ripa studied at the Skåne School of Painting in Malmö in 1928-1929, as well as in Leipzig and Dresden in 1930. Later he studied at Maison Watteau in 1934 and at Académie Colarossi in 1935 and at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Aksel Jørgensen. During the period 1942-1950, Ripa worked mainly with theater decorations in Stockholm and Malmö as well as for various public parks.

His art consists of drawings, still life and landscape motifs from Skåne and southern Europe in oil. As an illustrator, he has illustrated, among other things, Margareta Suber's travel stories. He was one of the initiators of the creation of the Scandinavian artist group Blandingen 1938.

Ripa is represented at Landskrona Museum, Tomelilla Museum and Sirishamns Museum.
