1957 Landscape Painting, 'White Cottage,' by Swedish artist, Stig Wirde (1914-1962).
Post impressionist light fills this sun dappled painting. A loosely painted white cottage with blue windows and picket fence (oh the romance!). The sloping, bright orange roof tops peeping through a sage green tree.
About the Artist
Stig Ingvar Wirde, born March 12, 1914 in Norrköping, died January 7, 1962 in Málaga, was a Swedish painter and graphic artist.
Wirde was the son of the provincial physician Gustaf Julius Wirde and Lily Elisabet Lindner and married Vera Kupke in 1940 and Stina Johansson in 1945. Wirde studied at Blomberg's painting school from 1930 to 1931 and Otte Sköld's painting school from 1933 to 1934 and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1936–1942. As an academic leader he also attended the etching school where he was supervised by Emil Johanson-Thor and Harald Sallberg. He stayed for studies in Paris in 1937 and in Denmark from 1938 to 1939, and later several study trips to Spain and France. Wirde first became known as a graphic artist.
After spending a few years in France, he bought a house in the mountain village of Mijas high above the Spanish southern coastline where he set up a studio. Separately he exhibited in Norrköping, Borås, Finspång, Katrineholm and at Galerie Æsthetica in Stockholm. Together with Folke Henell, he exhibited in Linköping in 1943 and he participated in Sweden's general art association's salons in Stockholm 1938–1950 and in a series of Östgöta art society's exhibitions in Norrköping and Linköping. A memorial exhibition with his art was shown in Finspång in 1965.
His art consists of, among other things, portraits and landscapes from Læsø, Fårö, Öland, Småland, Skåne, Spain and Southern France, as well as illustrations and drawings. As an illustrator, he illustrated Artur Engströms Utflyktståg in 1951, Norrköpings Tidningen's anniversary cover in 1958, and a series of gastronomic news stories by Dani Liebenfeld in Norrköpings Tidningar. He was one of the initiators of the formation of Finspång's art association where he was chairman 1948-1953. Wirde is represented at the Modern Museum, Norrköping Art Museum and Östergötland Museum.
