Mid-century, cubist oil on canvas by French artist, Claude Schurr (1921-2014). This piece depicts white china cup, overturned, another cup brimming with blue and white mussels, a hyacinth blue, glass carafe, gnarly rock oysters on a plate, delicate shell-pink prawns, a cluster of brick red, sea urchins and a lemon. The colours are as fresh and breezy as a walk on the beach.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Schurr studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1938 to 1942. He was awarded a scholarship for the Casa Velázquez in 1949. He travelled in Europe. He has taught at the Académie Ranson and the École des Arts et Métiers in Paris. He was awarded the Prix Antral in 1948 and the Grand Prix National des Arts in 1950.

Above all a landscape, seascape and still-life painter, he sometimes painted compositions with figures and portraits. His facet compositions bring him close to the Post-Cubist movement. His range of light, fresh tones denote his preference for the light in Brittany and the coasts of northern France. His numerous wall decorations adorn the Harcourt studios in Paris, the psychiatric hospital in Ville-Evard, the Science Faculty of Nice, the liners Clément Ader, Raymond Poincarré and Foch. He has also realised lithographs and illustrated books, including La Grand'route de Blaise Cendrars (1952); The Bewitched ( L'Ensorcelée) by Barbey d'Aurevilly (1955), Les Philippes by Jules Renard (1958); Le Petit Ami by Paul Léautaud (1960); Moderato Cantabile by Marguerite Duras (1964); Regain by Jean Giono (1965); Viper in the Fist by Hervé Bazin (1965) and Hélène by Robert Marteau (1973).

Schurr has taken part in the various Salons in Paris: Salon des Moins de Trente Ans in 1941; the Salon d'Automne, where he has been a member, from 1942; Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries, Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Salon Comparaisons, Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture à l'Eau, and, from 1955, the Salon des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps. He also participated in numerous group exhibitions in the rest of France and abroad: in 1961 at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice, the museums of Tours and Nancy, the São Paulo Biennale and the Menton Biennale. He regularly exhibited his work in solo shows in Paris from 1946, and has also exhibited in the USA since 1946, then in Belgium and Switzerland.
