'Polperro Harbour, Cornwall' - John Higgins
£595.00 Sold out
Mid-century oil on board by St Ives artist John Higgins. Fishing boats in leaf green and cyan, rust and vermillion crowd the harbour. A yellow-grey house sits at an angle to the quay fighting for space with its green-windowed neighbour. A chap in red trousers strides purposefully, sending up and squall of seagulls who soar diagonally across the painting.
Born in1934 and brought up in Sussex, I first took an interest in painting when I was 17 years old. However it was many years later after making a living through a variety of jobs that I had the opportunity to paint full time when I moved to Cornwall in 1988.
For some years I ran private painting holidays in England and Greece with my wife Nicola. I also opened my own gallery, Higgins Gallery where I sold Nicola’s and my watercolours.
My paintings continue to change, at one time I was somewhat obsessed with painting Godrevy lighthouse (over 200 works) and my love of the female form has also influenced many paintings. My latest work reflects my main source of current inspiration -- Cornwall’s industrial, fishing and architectural heritage.
Living in St Ives I am a member of the St Ives Society of Artists and the St Ives Art Club.
